The Collingwood College indoor sports centre is a facility for the learning community and an important focal point for the local community. The primary users of the facility are principally the College and is the homebase to the Collingwood Basketball Association (CBA). The Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) lead the project control group to facilitate the many stakeholders and users, which included College representatives, the CBA, City of Yarra, and Sport and Recreation Victoria.
The opportunity was to redevelop the tired existing sports centre, to create an inspiring centre for sport focussed learning programs and increased community engagement through modernised facilities. The design focussed on making the learning and the sport visible, celebrating the activities of the centre.
The new double court stadium was designed for competition standard basketball and netball, including fixed spectator seating, and the existing full court enclosure was refurbished for multiple sport activities. The design also connected the centre to an external grass pitch area for small-sided games and developed a landscaped social space for the expanded sports precinct and the College.
The newly formed circulation spine is a viewing gallery to the new courts and connects the ‘welcome’ from the public street arrival through to the College social ‘heart’. The Centre now provides independent offices for the College and CBA, a main reception with connected canteen/kiosk, merchandise sales point, team and referee changing rooms, amenities provision, with a multi-purpose room created for meetings, briefings, gatherings and as a teaching space. The Sports Centre was designed for access by all.
