Rossbourne School

Rossbourne School in Hawthorn, Victoria, is recognised for its unique and innovative neuro-diverse educational programs, aiming to unlock students’ potential so they can excel as global citizens. Its mission is to enhance students’ life chances by placing them at the centre of learning and creating opportunities to develop independence, social connections, resilience, and respectful relationships.

Designed by Smith+Tracey Architects the completed Multi-Purpose Performance Centre has been designed to enrich students’ experiential learning journey by empowering their self-worth and confidence in an intimate and safe educational setting.  Its central position within the school grounds re-enforces the school purpose in enhancing the opportunities of its students by putting them at the centre of learning, and creating opportunities to develop independence, social connections, resilience, and respectful relationships.

The transparent ‘lightbox’ creates a highly visible, connected space, with a sculptural folded perforated metal veil wrapping the building, providing a crafted shading device through day and an illuminated facade during evening events.

Within, students engage in Performing Arts classes designed to foster a love of musical & creative activity, along with a diversity of other activities, expanding the schools offering.

This new flexible space is a celebration of collaborative learning, shared performance, and school gatherings, allowing activities to expand out into the social heart of the school further contributing to this vibrant community.
