Smith+Tracey Architects is proud to announce the launch of our inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), marking a significant milestone in our commitment to honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories in our practice.

Our Reflect RAP serves as an introduction to our reconciliation journey, focusing on building relationships, deepening respect, and exploring opportunities with First Nations communities. By adopting this plan, we aim to lay a solid foundation for future reconciliation initiatives, ensuring our projects genuinely reflect the places and people we serve.

Central to our practice philosophy is “people-centred design,” which acknowledges the influence we have on communities and our responsibility to respect Country. Through consultative processes with First Nations communities, we strive to create environments that honour cultural heritage and promote inclusivity.

Our commitment is further demonstrated through active engagement in projects involving cultural heritage significance. For instance, in projects in Kew and the Dandenong Ranges, we coordinated archaeological investigations to ensure development would respect and preserve cultural sites. We have also collaborated with First Nations artists and representatives on our education projects to incorporate cultural narratives and design elements that reflect local First Nations histories and stories.

By formalising our commitment through the Reflect RAP, we not only contribute to the broader national reconciliation movement but also set a precedent within the architecture and design industry. Our approach highlights the importance of integrating cultural awareness and respect into the core of design practices, fostering environments that are inclusive, respectful, and reflective of Australia’s rich First Nations cultural heritage.

As we continue this journey, we acknowledge that the Reflect RAP is just the beginning. We aspire to deepen our engagement with First Nations communities, ensuring that future projects are developed with a profound understanding and respect for Country. This commitment not only enhances the quality and authenticity of our designs but also contributes meaningfully to Australia’s reconciliation journey.
